Join our Team of Volunteers
BIRRDsong is all about people and service. We maintain a open and accepting atmosphere where people from all different backgrounds can serve our community in a supportive manner.
We encourage peers to discover their own special niche in our group.
Becoming socially active, even in small ways, helps people with brain injury to reduce their sense of social isolation while enhancing ther cognitive recovery. We believe that everyone has something to contribute.
"Volunteering helps peers reactivate that which lies hidden just beneath their brain injury."
Peer Support Volunteer Opportunities
Meeting Facilitation- Volunteer to facilitate one or two of our monthly support meetings. Gain experience in leading a friendly and welcoming group of peers who face similar challenges with memory, communication, slowness, anxiety and social isolation. We are helping one another take incremental steps to move forward in our lives. A full outline of the meeting steps are provided and as well as orientation and training as needed. We are here to support you each step of the way. When we reach out to serve others, we learn, grow and develop ourselves.
Meeting Set-up - Come and meet others while laying out the meeting supplies, coffee tea, eating utensils and brochures and handouts. Volunteers arrive for set-up around 8:45 AM and work for about 30 - 40 minutes before the meeting begins at 9:30AM. We all pitch in at the close of the meeting to clear tables and return items to the storage area. Your participation is very important to ensure that peers have a reliable meeting setting that supports social interaction, healing and personal growth.
Greeter- Newcomers are greeted at the door and given a name tag and assistance with finding seating that supports their special needs. Greeters make sure visitors and peers receive handouts and get an opportunity to sign up on our attendance and contact list. Our goal is to help everyone feel welcome and comfortable.
Peer Planning Team -Peer Support Coordinator Brian Liebenstein will be facilitating quarterly planning meetings to help peers identify the types of activities, workshops, informational programs and meetings they desire for the next year that will best support their individual and group needs. Planning requires forethought utilizing our executive functions and involves the entire group. Peers are the foundation of BIRRDsong.
Your needs, ideas, creativity and participation are welcomed and supported. We help others in order to help ourselves. Planning is essential in order to build a bright future for ourselves.
Peer Coordinator/ Assistant - Develop your leadership, organization and planning skills in this active role as meetings and actvities coordinators. You are the front line response team connecting with peers listening to their needs, capturing their ideas and supporting their participation in our unique peer led brain injury recovery community. Their collective ideas will be channeled into a yearly calendar of enriching and life enhancing events, meetings, workshops and actvities to assist in the brain injury recovery process and to improve lives. Your successful coordination of peer meetings and activities and the development of our calendar will quickly prepare you for back to school/work re-entry and/or board servce. Our previous coordinator stated, " because of my role with BIRRDsong, I gained the skills and confidence to go back to school, earning a degree and now I am working in the job I love best". You will receive orientation and on-going training and support throughout your service period from the board president/vice president.
